In Kenya, as in many other parts of the world, the proliferation of fake academic certificates poses a significant challenge to the integrity of the hiring process. A simple audit by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission found about 2,100 government employees with fake certificates. The rise of counterfeit certificates undermines the credibility of academic institutions and erodes trust in the meritocracy of employment. For employers, the task of discerning genuine qualifications from fraudulent ones has become increasingly daunting, leading to potential mismatches between job requirements and the actual capabilities of candidates. This phenomenon not only jeopardizes organizational performance but also exacerbates unemployment rates by impeding the recruitment of qualified individuals. Additional, this can erode Kenya’s respect globally at a time the government is reaching out to various nations to export labour. Consequently, there is a pressing need for innovative solutions that empower employers to verify the authenticity of academic certificates efficiently and reliably, ideally at the point of conducting interviews. Leveraging technology, CUE seeks a solution that can offer viable avenues for addressing this challenge and restoring trust in the hiring process.
